Music of Ibero-America, piano solo and chamber works, a concert of wide variety of music from a number of countries. For solo piano, Arturo Márquez’ Días de Mar y Rio (the rhythms of the son, with roots in Cuba, as it was reinterpreted in northern Mexico); Alberto Ginastera’s Danzas Argentinas (evoking the gaucho tradition of the pampas of Argentina); and other solo pieces by Hebert Vásquez (Uruguay/Mexico, Capriccio), Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazil, As Tres Marias), and Miguel de Águila (Uruguay, Toccata).
Chamber pieces include Combat del Somni, a song cycle by Spanish-Catalan composer Frederic Mompou based on poetry by Josep Janés, performed with soprano Paula Swalin; and Federico Ibarra’s cello sonata, a tour de force of the modern cello literature, but rarely heard in the United States, with cellist Lisa Collins.
